Virginia became a state on the 25th of June 1788 and it was named after Queen Elizabeth of England who was known all over the world as the “Virgin Queen”. This name was suggested by Sir Walter Raleigh around the year 1584 and this is how the state got its name.

In the same year, the London Company established the colony of Virginia as the first English colony of the New World.
The English forced the tribes to give away their land and this resulted in slave labor that occupies a significant place in the history of the colony. Virginia is one of the Thirteen Colonies of the American Revolution and it joined the Confederacy at the time of the American Civil War. At that point of time Virginia served as the capital of the Confederacy with the state of Virginia separated. Prominent Virginians were also instrumental in drafting the Constitution of the United States.
Over the years Virginia has developed and emerged to be a balanced form of economy with different sources of income that cover military, farming, business and government. Most of the people who are working in this state are part of the service sector. Today Virginia has the largest segment of technology workers in the state and it is home to around 18 Fortune 500 companies.
