Texas Phone Directory

Texas is located in the west of south-central United States. It was earlier considered as the largest state of 48 south central US states. However, after the inclusion of Alaska in the Union during 1959, it became the second largest state of the south central US states.

Bordered on the north by Oklahoma and Arkansas, on the east by Arkansas and Lousiana, on the south-east by the Gulf of Mexico, on the south-west by Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo, Leon, Coahuila and Chihuahua, and on the west by New Mexico, the state covers a total area of 691,030 sq km. Of the total area, 678,624 sq km is land, which represents 8.8 pc of the US mainland and 7.4 pc of the nation, as a whole. The remaining area is comprised of inland water.

The diverse landscape, a variety of wildlife and beautiful scenery of the state have made it a major tourist’s attraction. The largest city of Texas is Houston, the seat of Harris County. San Antonio, El Paso and Austin (the state capital) are the major cities of Texas. Apart from Houston (the largest city of the state), Dallas-Fort Worth is considered as the largest metropolitan area of Texas.

In 1998, Texas became the second-largest state of the US in terms of population. The level of population of the state is raised from 16986510 to 20851820, a substantial 22.8 pc increase, between the year 1990 and 2000. This has been considered as the second-largest increase among the 50 states for the period under review. The population reached 21779893 in the year 2002. The population is expected to grow to around 27.2 million by 2025.

Given the vastness and topographic variety of the state, it becomes a difficult task to describe the climate of Texas. In general, a ‘maritime climate’ prevails along the Gulf coast. The hot summer months starting from April and continuing through October make the place too dry for autumn foliage. The winter starts in November and lasts until March-end.

It is interesting to note that, when the Spanish and Anglo-Americans arrived the diversed landscape in Texas was covered with around 500 species of grass. Also, there are around 20 native trees in the state, such as catclaw, flowering mimosa, huisache, black persimmon, huajillo- to name a few.

Traditionally, Texas was an agriculture-based economy. Going back as far as 1849, the number of industrial establishments was too scanty in the state. As per data available, there were only 309 industrial establishments in the state. However, the number of establishments grew by nearly tenfold in 1899. During World War II, the value added by manufacture surpassed the $1 billion mark. The value of shipments by manufacture reached $302 billion in 1997 and the state was ranked second to California.
