The state of Georgia is situated in the southeaster part of the United States. It was introduced in the year 1732 and is believed to be the last of the original thirteen colonies. It holds the fourth rank when it comes to ratifying the United States Constitution on 2nd January, 1788. It announced its secession from the Union on 21st January, 1861 and was one of the original amongst the seven Confederate states. It was the last state that was restored to the Union on 15th July, 1870. With an approximate 9,829,211 residents as of July 1, 2009, Georgia holds the ninth rank amongst the most populous state. It is also famous by the names of Empire State of the South as well as the Peach State. The capital of the state is Atlanta and is the most populous city. The state of Georgia is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean as well as South Carolina, on the south by Florida and on the north by North Carolina and Tennessee. The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain range in the vast
Appalachian Mountains system. The middle piedmont extends from the foothills up to the fall line. The peak point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald, 4,784 and the lowest point is sea level. It is spread over an area of 59,425 square miles (153,909 km2) and holds the twenty fourth positions amongst the fifty states of the United States. It is considered to be the largest state that is located in the east of River Mississippi in terms of land area. However, it holds the fourth position after Michigan, Florida, and Wisconsin in terms of total area. It starts from the Atlantic Ocean, and runs up the River Savannah, northwest to its origin at the confluence of Seneca and Tugaloo Rivers. It then spreads up the Tugaloo and into the River Chattooga, its most important tributary. These bounds were determined in the year 1797 Treaty of Beaufort and tested in the United States Supreme court in the two South Carolina vs. Georgia in 1923 and 1989.

Each region of Georgia is known for its distinctive characteristics. For instance, the Ridge and Valley which lies in the northwest corner of this state include sandstone, limestone, shale as well as other sedimentary rocks that have yielded construction grade limestone, ocher, barite as well as small amounts of coal. Georgia is known for its diverse mix of flora as well as fauna. This state has nearly two hundred and fifty tree species as well as fifty eight protected plants. The native trees of Georgia include a variety of pines, red cedar, maples, oaks, sweetgum, Cyprus as well as white hickories and scaly bark to name a few. Palmettos as well as other subtropical flora are found in the coastal and southern region. Mountain laurel as well as yellow jasmine makes up a couple of flowering shrubs in the state. The state enjoys a humid subtropical climate.
