A Brief History of Florida

The country Florida was named by Juan Ponce de Leon in the year 1513 on April 2, who was a Spanish Explorer, later became the First Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of Spanish crown. According to archeological research, Florida has been inhabited for thousands of years before the settlements of Europeans. There tribes like Ais, Calusa, the Apalachee, Timucua and the Tocobago used to leave on that particular land. In the history of Europe, we find the name of Florida involved in the war of Seminole. This is also known as the Florida War. That was the war between the Native Americans, collectively known as Seminoles, and the United State. It took place in three parts, in the following years: First Seminole War took place from 1817 to 1818.The Second Seminole War took place from 1835 to 1842 and the Third Seminole War took place from 1855 to 1858. Juan Ponce de Leon gave the name “Florida” according to two reasons. First reason is, it is a land full of flower. In Spanish language “Pascua Florida” means “Flowery Easter” season, which means the land’s climatic condition is suitable for the growth of flowering plants. The second point of view is, Juan Ponce de Leon may not be the first man who discovered that land and named Florida, but, according to one report, at least one indigenous tribesman who he encountered in Florida in 1513 spoke Spanish, from that date forward the land became known as “La Florida”. But again, although after 1630 Tegesta (after the Tequesta Tribes) was throughout the 1700s an alternate name of choice for the Florida Peninsula following publication of a map by The Dutch cartographer Hessel Gerritsz in Joannes de Laet’s History Of The New World.
