The system of dividing the states into smaller regions and then assigning a Area Code to each such region came into place way back in 1947. The idea behind providing each region in America with an area code originated as a result of the combined efforts of AT&T and Bell Laboratories.

The Area code 947 is the area code for the Oakland County in the state of Michigan. Originally, Oakland County fell under the coverage of Area code 248. But the drastic growth of telephone numbers in this region forced the Michigan Public Service Commission to approve a geographic area code split. Thus, the new 947 code came into existence in the year 2002. This overlay meant that area code 947 will serve the same geographical region which was already under the coverage of area code 248. This system allows the sharing of load between the two area codes thus enhancing the service provided to telecom customers in the region. This system of overlay also facilitated the easy classification of phone numbers.

The way the customers dialed changed when the system of overlay came into place. Customers in the 248/947 area were now required to dial 10 digits, 3 digits for the area code, followed by the seven digit phone number. Zone and toll calls required the customer to dial 11 digits, the first digit in such calls being 1.

The Oakland County is the center of major economic activity in the State of Michigan. Area Code 947 has a nice blend of large cities and small town settlements. For example, while the Farmington Hills is the wealthiest and the largest city under the Oakland County, smaller townships and villages such as the Lake Orion and the Huntington woods also exist.
